If you are a professional model, a photographer will most likely guide you through a variety of model poses throughout the photo shoot. But if you are an inspiring model and are still working your way up to the top—you may have to control your poses to ensure great headshots and sample modeling photographs.

Live show models, promo models, photographic models, and runway models all rely on professional model poses to succeed. Whether you aspire to appear in print magazines or fashion shows and Hollywood movies; if you want to be a model, pay special attention to this insider guide to modeling poses.

Breathe
Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease.

Posture
Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex your stomach muscles. Despite your weight or state of shape, your abdomen will appear more toned if you flex.

Limbs
Symmetry is officially out in the modeling world. When posing, make sure to differentiate your arms and legs with asymmetrical poses. If you have one arm long and straight by your side, make sure the other arm is bent. Whether a big or small angle, the bend will make the modeling pose look more real, less artificial. Continue the asymmetry to your legs. If one leg is locked straight, give the other leg a casual bend.

Camera
Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can remain stationary in your modeling pose—and your eyes can do all the work. Head and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great model poses.

Sitting Poses
If you are sitting down during your photo shoot—don’t think it’s ok to slack off. In fact, sitting photo shoots require a lot of extra work. If you are sitting down or reclining, it’s important to put your eight on the back of one thigh, rather than distributing your weight equally on both thighs. If you roll one hip up from the ground or surface, shifting your weight will be simple. This pose results in a slimming effect that you don’t want to miss out on.

Cleavage
To make sure your best assets shine, there are a few basic guidelines to follow. Based on two distinct poses, a forward lean and a backward lean, any model with any breast size can maximize cleavage. When leaning forward, either bring your arms together at your waist, keep your arms straight at the elbows and clasp your hands together below your waist, or simply cross your arms. When leaning backward, raise your arms about your shoulders and head, keep your arms apart, and always slouch for the best cleavage results.

Smile
If you have a naturally beautiful smile—show your pearly whites with pride, just not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses, try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh, or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do.

In addition to these personalized tips for modeling poses, every model should be aware of the basics of posing. There are 4 main types of model poses: lifestyle pose, movement pose, portrait pose, and body pose.

Lifestyle
The lifestyle pose evokes a sense of everyday living with common body movements and facial expressions. Throughout the day, moments of happiness, love, anger, and hope arise. To succeed at the lifestyle pose, each model must be able to recreate these everyday emotions.

Movement
The movement pose captures a specific action, such as running or jumping. Because this pose is most often used for a marketing photo shoot—the model is used to promote a product. Each model must be able to smile and laugh when using the products in the photo shoot.

Portrait
This modeling pose emphasizes the face of the model—and relies purely on facial features. The model will be in modest makeup and relaxed hair and should pose with a casual, genuine smile. Many portrait photographs are close up and emphasize details of the model’s face. If you are scheduled for a portrait photo shoot, make sure to pay extra attention to your skin and drink at least 8-12 glasses of water a day.

Body
Full-length photographs require body poses. Models are encouraged to shift weight between hips and make arms and lengths into asymmetrical stances. Although many body poses do not require specific facial expressions, putting your entire body into character during full-length poses helps your body find a natural balance.

Keeping up with the Kardashians…

1980 – Defense attorney Robert Kardashian and wife, Kris Houghton, welcome their second child, Kimberly Noel, to their posh L.A. lifestyle. The growing brood already includes one-year-old Kourtney and will add Khloe in 1984 and Robert Jr. in 1987. By pre-school, Kim is palling around with Paris Hilton, and by 1994, her father is in the media spotlight when he houses and later defends O.J. Simpson following the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

1990 – After her parent’s divorce – her mother remarries Olympian Bruce Jenner in 1991 – Kardashian hits puberty and is ashamed of her growing body. “I used to say my prayers before bed and pray I would stop developing,” she tells Playboy. With time, though, Kardashian grows confidence, even defending the authenticity of her curves: “I always laugh when it says on the Internet that I have fake boobs or butt implants or injected lips, because it’s so not true.”

2000 - Kardashian, 20, marries music producer Damon Thomas (right), 30, who works with the likes of Pink and Faith Evans. But death doesn’t do them part, as Kardashian and Thomas endure a messy divorce in 2004. According to PEOPLE, Thomas calls Kardashian a “compulsive shopper.”

2004 – After singer Brandy appears on a worst-dressed list, Kardashian is hired as her personal stylist. The stint parlays into a full-time business for Kardashian as a stylist and personal shopper to stars like Lindsay Lohan. Around this time, she begins dating Brandy’s brother, R&B singer Ray J. In 2006, business is booming and, with sisters Khloe and Kourtney, Kardashian opens Dash, a boutique in Calabasas, Calif. But in 2008, Brandy and Ray J’s mother, Sonja Norwood, sues Kardashian and her siblings, alleging that they made more than more than $120,000 in unauthorized charges on an American Express card.

2007 – While rumors of a sex tape involving Kardashian and ex-boyfriend, Ray J, swirl, Kardashian denies any such tape exists. “There is no amount of money that could ever convince me to release any tape, even if I had one,” she tells Complex. But the tape eventually surfaces on the Internet, and Kardashian sues Vivid Entertainment to suppress its distribution, saying “it would humiliate me and ruin my family.” By April, Kardashian settles with Vivid to distribute the tape.

Kardashian gets her own E! reality series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which documents her career and family life, with sisters Kourtney and Khloe, momager Kris, and stepdad Bruce Jenner. The first season features Kim debating whether or not to pose for Playboy. “At the heart of this series – despite the cat fights and endless sarcasm – is a family that truly loves and supports one another,” Ryan Seacrest, executive producer of the series, tells Daily Variety.

Kardashian appears on the cover of Playboy – and bares all inside. “Of course you’re nervous and want more time to work out. But I’m proud to show people who I am,” she tells Men’s Fitness about the shoot. “You always see the typical skinny models and I’m not that and I’m proud not to be that.” In 2008, she inks a deal to be the latest face of Bongo Jeans.

2008 – Kardashian appears as a contestant on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars. “I was really happy when I saw it was Mark!” she blogs about partner Mark Ballas. “We can actually dance together and that is really, really exciting.” Kardashian is eliminated on the fifth anniversary of her father’s death. “I just know he’s really happy and watching over me and I made him proud,” she says before rushing to her family and breaking down into tears.

2009 - The third season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians returns to E! Upping the ante and the celeb drama, Kim gets LASIK surgery before dancing with the Pussycat Dolls, Khloe poses nude for PETA after dealing with weight issues, and Kourtney hires her mom Kris to manage her career in addition to Kim’s.

2004 – After graduating high school, Colorado-native Heidi Montag heads to California to crack the books at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. At a freshman orientation, she meets Lauren Conrad, star of MTV’s hit reality show, Laguna Beach. “Everyone in the room was kind of gothy, and we were the two blond girls in the room scared out of our minds,” Montag recalls to the New York Times in 2006. “I ran up to her and said, ‘Will you please talk to me.’” Soon after, the new friends plot their move to L.A. to study at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

2006 – MTV develops a spinoff with Conrad called The Hills, featuring Conrad’s move to L.A. as she studies fashion, interns at Teen Vogue, and lives with Montag. Creator Adam DiVello tells PEOPLE, “It’s really about the next stage in life, when you leave high school and leave home for the first time.” In the first season, Montag drops out of FIDM to work for the event-planning firm, Bolthouse Productions.

2007 – During the second season of the hit show, tension surfaces between Montag and Conrad when Montag begins dating instigating bad boy, Spencer Pratt. Montag eventually moves in with Pratt, ignoring Conrad’s warning of his wandering eye and her prediction that it will ruin their friendship. Conrad is also hurt when the couple urges her friend, Jen Bunney, to hook up with her ex, Brody Jenner. “I … felt so betrayed,” Conrad tells Montag.

Although Pratt tells EW, “We would get engaged; we just wouldn’t do it on Lauren’s show,” he does just that. Around that time, Montag appears on CosmoGIRL!, but readers of the teen mag question editors’ judgment. They call Montag “plastic and fake” and say she “trashed her best friend.” An editor responds, “I just wish everyone would cut Heidi a little slack. Just imagine if you and your best friend got into some huge fight, and for whatever reason, you were never allowed to tell your side of the story, but your friend could, and everyone believed her.”

2008 – With her new look, Montag appears on the cover of Maxim, where she says, “[Lauren's] changed. Some people go more Hollywood than others…I’ve heard from other people that she’s a big diva now.” Of their so-called reality show, Montag explains that it’s “22 minutes” that’s “edited for drama…They’re not with us all the time, although I wish they were, because it would be a way crazier show. Let’s see how Lauren would look then!”

Attempting to breakthrough as a singer, Montag releases her music video, “Higher,” which receives an almost unanimously negative reception by PEOPLE.com readers. Directed by her faithful Pratt and featuring a bikini-clad Montag romping across a beach, the underperforming video is shot in 30 minutes, independently, for “zero dollars.” “All negative energy,” Montag tells PEOPLE. “I completely ignore it.”

Montag, 21, and Conrad, 22, appear together – with Audrina Patridge, 22, and Whitney Port, 23 – on the cover of Rolling Stone. The shoot is the first time the two frenemies have been photographed together since their ratings-boosting feud. The magazine calls The Hills – which an MTV exec calls “the most influential show we’ve ever had” – “a maddeningly addictive TV show in which nothing ever really happens.” “Who were Paris and Nicole before they weren’t friends? That’s when they became superstars,” Montag’s Pratt says. “If Lauren and Heidi were friends, people wouldn’t tune in.”

While on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Montag and Pratt elope. “I would be upset if she got married and didn’t invite me!” Montag’s father Bill tells PEOPLE. Montag’s mother, Darlene Egelhoff, similarly voices her disapproval, even claiming Pratt “drugged” Montag into marrying him. The wedding is filmed for season five of The Hills, but isn’t legal in the U.S., as California does not recognize marriages performed outside of the country.

2009 – At 22, Montag officially becomes a Pratt when she marries her longtime beau, 25, in an early evening ceremony at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, Calif. The Hills stars exchange vows before about 200 guests, including Audrina Patridge and Brody Jenner.

Montag appears as Playboy’s latest centerfold and opens up about being perceived as a TV villain. “If women aren’t jealous of you, talking about you and cutting you down, then you’re a nerd,” she tells the magazine. “And I would never want to be that.” She also reveals that isn’t done with plastic surgery and eventually plans to “go bigger” for Spencer.

Ke$ha never did hear from Prince, but the incident speaks volumes about this 22-year-old newcomer’s firecracker personality and determination. “I’ve always known I wanted to be a performer,” she says. “There’s video of me at age five, naked and covered in body paint, saying, ‘I’m going to be a rock star and there’s no way anyone is going to stop me!’ It’s my calling. If I don’t go for it, I’m going to feel like a tool when I’m 50.”

Luckily, Ke$ha won’t have to find out what regret feels like. She is currently at work writing and recording her debut album with executive producer Dr. Luke, who has scored No. 1 smashes for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, and Flo Rida. After falling for her playful half-sung/half-rapped vocal delivery on a rough demo, Luke brought Ke$ha to RCA Records, which signed her in February 2009. The album — which will also feature Ke$ha’s collaborations with veteran hitmaker Max Martin (Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears) and in-demand songwriter/producer Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, 3OH!3, Spank Rock) — is shaping up to be an edgy collection of hard-hitting electro-pop songs, made all the more irresistible by their high-octane punk energy and Ke$ha’s irreverent lyrics and attitude. “I want my music to be fun, unapologetic, rowdy, quirky, humorous, and interesting,” she says, “but with substance behind it. I’m an emotional person underneath all my fronting. I want people to listen to it and feel like they can relate.”

Not surprisingly, the songs showcase Ke$ha’s flair for storytelling, though her choice of subject matter isn’t exactly conventional. There’s a song about the time Ke$ha threw up in a closet during a party at Paris Hilton’s pad (“Party at a Rich Dude’s House”), and one she says is about the time “some dumb bitch fronted like she was my friend but then secretly tried to bring me down” (“Backstabber”), and another about finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her with a famous pop starlet who shall remain nameless (“Kiss & Tell”). Oh, and the one she wrote about beginning to see the universe as a cyclical chain of connected events after meeting a guy in a club (“Chain Reaction,” which has been featured on MTV’s The Hills).

Ke$ha credits her love for story-songs to spending her formative years hanging out with veteran songwriters in Nashville. Her mom Pebe, a former punk-rock singer, is a songwriter whose career took off in Music City in the late ’70s when a song she co-wrote, called “Old Flames Can’t Hold A Candle To You,” became a hit for Joe Sun in 1978 and a country chart-topper for Dolly Parton in 1980. But by the time Ke$ha was born in 1987 (during a party in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, Pebe was going through a bad patch, struggling to support Ke$ha and her older brother through her music. “We were on welfare and food stamps,” Ke$ha says. “One of my first memories is my mom telling me, ‘If you want something, just take it.’”

In 1991, Pebe moved the family back to Nashville, where she had landed a new publishing deal. Ke$ha saw the inside of a lot of recording studios. “I thought everyone grew up in a recording studio,” she says. She attended a music school in the Tennessee countryside (“where some of the kids didn’t have any shoes,” she recalls), took songwriting classes, and fell in love with country music greats Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline. “I’d listen to these beautiful songs and they all told stories,” she says. “Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline is one of my all-time favorite records.” From time to time, Pebe let Ke$ha sing on tracks she was working on. “My mom always told me, ‘You have a good voice, practice singing,’ so I’d sing everything all the time,” Ke$ha says.

When Ke$ha was 17, she quit high school, “which was crazy because I was enrolled in an International Baccalaureate program and was going to go to Columbia University and study psychology,” she says, “but I wanted to move back to L.A. and pursue my music.” That’s when she met Dr. Luke. “I had been looking for a female artist with an incredible, distinctive voice who had her own style,” Luke says. “Ke$ha didn’t sound like anybody else.” Dr. Luke was also working with red-hot hip-hop artist Flo Rida on a track for his second album. One night, Ke$ha was hanging out with them and the rapper told her he wanted a female voice on a track and asked if she wanted to lay down a vocal. Naturally, she obliged. In February, that track, “Right Round,” soared to No. 1, selling more than 636,000 downloads its first week out, and shattering the all-time one-week digital single sales record. (Ke$ha also contributes her sassy vocal stylings to “Touch Me,” another track from Flo Rida’s upcoming 2009 album R.O.O.T.S.)

“When I first heard my voice on ‘Right Round’ on the radio, I started screaming and crying,” Ke$ha says. “I may seem kind of crazy, but behind it all I have my s**t together. I’m working really hard to make this happen and it’s nice to see that hard work pay off. I mean, three years ago I was stealing canned vegetables from the dollar store to survive. Now I’m on a No. 1 song, working on my album, and have a little change in my pocket. To be able to take my mom out to dinner is the best feeling in the world.”

Pamela Jean Noble will be starring in film with R&B singer DeVante

When Pamela Jean Noble began acting on television and modeling for commercials at age five as a hobby, she never imagined that years later these experience will lead her to a major role in a compelling film and a spot in a worldwide online art gallery.

The 21-year-old Fontana resident co-starred two years ago in the movie “Resurrection Mary,” about a legendary ghost story and a high school student during the 1930s.

She was also an All-American model for the January issue of Surf Illustrated.

Today, Pamela Jean is filming and recording work for her new movie (as of yet untitled) together with DeVante from the R&B group Jodeci; she is a model for TAPOUT, a mixed martial arts clothing company; and she still finds time to study at California State University San Bernardino, majoring in kinesiology.

“I’m constantly working as a model, singing country music and acting. It’s my passion, I don’t see myself doing something different,” said Pamela Jean. “It is very hard to break into the business and you have to be very well prepared, that’s why I am constantly studying and learning new techniques.”

A native of Los Angeles who grew up in Fontana, Pamela Jean hopes to film an action movie soon and dreams of one day performing at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

“I performed at the House of Blues when I was 14 and I remember having stage fright, but when the song started I felt very relaxed,” she said. “I don’t know where my singing career is heading, but for now I’m focusing on the album we are recording in Las Vegas.

“I’ve been told many times that no country music label is going to take me because there are too many blondes, and I’m not going to dye my hair.”

A graduate of Kaiser High School, Pamela Jean went through many obstacles during her early years. School officials wanted to drop her out because she constantly missed school due to auditions and work traveling, said her father Dale Noble, a film producer.

Fortunately, her drive to become a star never faded and now Pamela Jean is enjoying the results. Last year, Pamela Jean bought a house in a quiet neighborhood in San Bernardino, where she spends her time preparing for auditions or a role in a film.

“I like my neighborhood because it is very quiet on a Friday night. I am a very shy person and I also like my space, that’s why I could never live in the Los Angeles area — it’s too noisy,” said Pamela Jean.

Responsible, mature, and passion-driven could be good descriptions of Pamela Jean, who during her childhood refused to audition for the Disney and Nickelodeon channels and for soap operas because “they tied your hands and don’t have a good acting reputation.”

Over the years, Pamela Jean has worked in several long and short films including “Social Theory Revised” and has appeared in several music videos and commercials.

To acquire better acting skills, Pamela Jean follows closely the work of Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, and Angelina Jolie, among other female actresses, and wishes to one day work next to Christina Bale, star of the 2008 movie “Terminator Salvation.”

Pamela Jean, who is currently training to do her own action stunts for future movies, understands that to make her dream come true, she will have to work hard — advice she gives to young aspiring models, singers and actresses.

“It is possible to achieve dreams but it’s not free. I understand there are challenges and obstacles ahead, but with hard work all of them can be demolished,” she said.

To help ensure your admission to an open casting, go to one of the Websites as soon as possible beginning on Sept. 29, 2009, and download and print the Open Casting Registration Form for the particular open casting you wish to attend. Sponsor may terminate the availability of the Open Casting Registration Form for one or more open castings based on considerations of time/space availability, in Sponsor’s sole judgment. Complete the form and bring it with you to the open casting. Anyone coming to an open casting without an Open Casting Registration Form for that open casting will be admitted only if there is time/space availability, in Sponsor’s sole judgment.

You must also bring with you two forms of ID, one of which must be a photo ID that shows your date of birth and address, swimwear (no lingerie) and high heels. If you are not admitted to an open casting, you may enter online within the deadlines for online entries stated above. Initial Screening of the Open Casting Entries.

The open casting entries will be initially screened based on the following criteria: entrant’s potential public appeal, entrant’s presence, how photogenic the entrant is, and the consistency of the entrant’s appearance with the Victoria’s Secret brand image. This initial screening will take place in three stages. First, you will be viewed by a professional casting agent. Those entrants who pass this first stage will proceed to the second stage, at which time you will walk in your swimwear and high heels for a professional casting agent. Those entrants who pass this second stage will proceed to the third stage to be interviewed by Victoria’s Secret’s Chief Marketing Officer, Victoria’s Secret Executive Vice-President of Public Relations, and a professional casting agent (the “expert panel”). You will be asked to pose and demonstrate your best “model’s walk” in your swimwear and high heels, and in English to state your full name, age and city of residence and answer the judges’ questions about yourself, what is unique about you, and how your appearance as a Runway Angel in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Television Special would enhance the Fashion Show.

SELECTION OF 10 FINALISTS AND MODEL BOOT CAMP: From among the online entries and open casting entries that pass the initial screening, the expert panel will select the top 10, who shall be the potential Finalists, based on the following criteria: entrant’s potential public appeal, entrant’s presence, how photogenic the entrant is, and the consistency of the entrant’s appearance with the Victoria’s Secret brand image. The expert panel will also select two Alternates, based on the same criteria, who may become Finalists should Sponsor determine that any of the potential Finalists is not eligible to become a Finalist. Any ties will be broken by the expert panel’s reconsideration of the tying entries based on the above-stated criteria.

Model Boot Camp will commence on or about Nov. 3, 2009. The ten Finalists will live together in a loft apartment or other shared accommodation with meals provided and will participate in Model Boot Camp where they will receive basic training and coaching in modeling skills. Each Finalist will be subject to videotaping/photographing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and may have little or no privacy. Each Finalist must continue to live in the loft apartment/shared accommodation, participate in Model Boot Camp, and attend events and activities scheduled by Sponsor, until she is eliminated from the Search, which will range from approximately two weeks to a month, depending on how far the Finalist progresses in the Search. Once eliminated, a Finalist will be transported home by air and/or ground transportation, as arranged by Sponsor. If a failure to comply with these Official Rules becomes known or arises after a potential Finalist, an Alternate, or a Finalist has been brought to New York City, the Sponsor can arrange for her immediate return home.

SELECTION OF THE SEARCH WINNER: There will be 3 rounds of public voting to select the Search Winner. With each successive round, the number of Finalists remaining in the Search will be reduced until the Winner is selected.

In each round the public will be invited to visit either of the Websites, view a video or photograph of the Finalists still remaining in the Search, and vote for their favorite video or photograph. Each round will showcase the skills of each remaining Finalist in one or more particular aspects of modeling including presence, confidence, personality, poise, photogenic qualities, versatility, ability to cope with pressure, ability to deliver scripted lines, ability to brand, walk, style and star quality. The public will be limited to one vote per day. The schedule of rounds is as follows:

THE SEARCH PRIZE: The Search Winner will appear walking the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Television Special and receive a $5,000 Victoria’s Secret Gift Card. Gift Card cannot be redeemed for purchases of gift cards or as an adjustment to prior purchases, or exchanged for cash. Approximate Retail Value of Prize: $5,000.
